Microbicides: Ideas Flourish, Money to Follow?
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed 36 microbicides that might be used by women to prevent HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. Microbicides are drugs in gel, cream, or suppository form that can be placed in the vagina or rectum. This would protect both heterosexual women and gay men from HIV infection. A woman can use the microbicide without even telling her partner. Studies have shown that women are more vulnerable to HIV infection. Of the 36 microbicides in development, 20 will be tested for safety and four will be tested for effectiveness.

Report: HIV prevention efforts remain crucial as global treatment access expands
Article Abstract:
Developed countries around the world are putting all efforts to make anti-retroviral therapy (ART) more accessible and the World Health Organization (WHO) hopes to make (ART) available to more than three million individuals by year 2005. It is however imperative that developing nations reduce incidence of new infections else, the need for treatment will far outpace the access to ART.

Reducing HIV vertical transmission scrutinized
Article Abstract:
Single-dose nevirapine for mothers and their newborn infants is a cornerstone for reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries from about 30% to 13% or less. The World Health Organization is considering revising its guidelines on nevirapine use in low-income countries in which global efforts to expand access to antiretroviral therapy are taking hold.
