Researchers make the case for human embryonic stem cell research
Article Abstract:
A research team led by Woo Suk Hwang announced the first successful cloning of early-stage human embryo using the technique of nuclear transfer, which was the first step towards creating human embryonic stem cells for treating variety of diseases. Critics of nuclear transfer are concerned that it will be used for reproductive cloning, the process used to create Dolly the sheep and other cloned animals.

Experimental therapies hold promise for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Article Abstract:
The new treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) involves methods such as gene therapy and RNA silencing. The primary goal in ALS research is to find out what leads to the selective killing of motor neurons both the upper motor neurons that send signals from the motor cortex and the lower motor neurons in the spinal cord that receive these signals and send them along to the muscles.

Studying cancer in 3 dimensions: 3-D models foster new insights into tumorigenesis
Article Abstract:
Researchers are growing cells in three dimensions to study the effect of different genes that cause cancer. In this way, they can add substances to the medium to simulate what goes on inside the body. Genes that cause cancer are called oncogenes.
