Resolving the Gulf War syndrome question
Article Abstract:
Existence of a Gulf War syndrome is a matter of contention seven years after the conflict. Failure to identify a definite cause and remedy for health problems of veterans of the conflict has raised doubt over the ability of mainstream medical science, in league with the government, to answer important medical questions. To resolve questions, research must be based on hypotheses that can be tested and must be peer-reviewed. Psychological disorders must be considered. An objective standard by which to evaluate research findings related to physical causes of unexplained symptoms is essential.

Counterpoint: responding to inadequate critique of birth defects paper
Article Abstract:
Criticism of an article on association between Gulf War service and risk of birth defects was unjustified. The study reported in the article was conducted without hypotheses on specific environmental exposure. It is true that the contention that children of Gulf War veterans are not at higher risk of birth defects than others has not been proved. Without a better hypothesis on measurable exposures and specific birth defects, however, the area of research cannot be expected to be a fruitful one.
