Restraint reduction in the head injury population
Article Abstract:
Reduction in use of restraints for head injury patients has been a goal at the neurosurgery unit of Shands Hospital, University of Florida, Gainesville. A simple, inexpensive solution has been effective. Placing mattresses on the floor and padding the walls eliminates risk of patients' falling. Infection control and neurosurgical physicians approved as did the family of the first patient for whom this room was used. Need for certain therapies, such as continuous feeding and intravenous fluids, was evaluated and ruled out, possible with use of a percutaneous gastric tube and a binder. Patients were easier to work with, being less agitated, and muscle tone was better.
