Resuscitation skills - part six: Synchronized electrical cardioversion
Article Abstract:
Synchronized electrical cardioversion (SEC) is the delivery of a shock to the myocardium to terminate a tachyarrhythmia, and in order to minimize the risk of inducing cardiac arrest the shock is timed so that it is delivered within the R wave, and not the T wave. SEC is indicated if the patient has a tachyarrhythmia, unstable and compromised such as with impaired consciousness, chest pain, heart failure, hypotension or other signs of shock, and it can be considered if drug therapy is ineffective.

Mouth-to-mouth ventilation
Article Abstract:
Mouth-to-mouth ventilations still find use in prolonged cardiac arrests if cerebral function is to be maintained and the chance of survival is to be optimized. The procedure to perform effective mouth-mouth ventilations, along with the necessary precautions to be taken while doing so, is presented.
