The role of nursing has involved providing physical care for dying patients. Nurses assume ethical and moral responsibility and their care patterns have persisted since the 19th century. They are expected to provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support to the patients and their families. Many nursing rituals have been strongly influenced by the medical perspective of death.

Planning for Death and Dying while Healthy: Lessons from the Gulf War Mobilization
Article Abstract:
Individuals are asked to participate in treatment decisions when a family member becomes seriously ill. Among these decisions is whether life support should be used. The choice to continue or discontinue treatment is presented at stressful time for all concerned. Planning for death and dying while the patient is healthy can be positive.
