Review of statistics usage in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Article Abstract:
Widespread misuse of statistics in journal articles may necessitate review by trained statisticians. Researchers reviewed 145 articles in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology for their use of statistical information. Appropriate statistics and conclusions were found in 44 articles (30.3%). Statistics were misused in 46 articles (31.7%), and showed gross error in 27 of these 46 articles. The use of statistics could not be evaluated in over half of the articles because statistics were either incomplete or lacked detail. Appropriate and complete statistics are needed in medical articles to substantiate study hypotheses.
