Ridge preservation: why not?
Article Abstract:
Dentists should take measures to preserve the alveolar ridge when pulling teeth. The alveolar ridge is the bone of the tooth socket. Once a tooth is removed, bone tends to resorb, which can result in both unsatisfactory aesthetic and functional results. The dentist should undertake alveolar ridge preservation whenever it seems likely that bone shrinkage will occur. Two types of materials are available: one is slowly absorbed, the other remains permanently. In both cases, the ridge is preserved and soft tissues are prevented from growing into the socket. Some materials require closing the gum over the socket, others do not. One type that does not require closure, Hard Tissue Replacement by Septodont Inc., is recommended. The procedure for installing that type is described. Undertaking ridge preservation halves the amount of bone loss over the next two to three years. The site should heal for two months or more before placing a false tooth and one year before implanting prostheses.

What category of impression material is best for your practice?
Article Abstract:
Three impression materials are used almost exclusively for the making of dental prostheses. These materials are vinyl polysiloxane (VPS), polyether, and reversible hydrocolloid. All have improved significantly since their introduction and are all acceptable. Choice of one over another depends on what particular type of denture is being made. For crowns, fixed bridges, and implants, VPS is a first choice. For removable dentures, polyether has better hydrophilic qualities.
