Rodeo helmets? Posse-bull
Article Abstract:
Rodeo riders and officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are at odds over the need for protective headgear for rodeo participants. Many rodeo riders feel that mandatory implementation of helmets or headgear is gratuitous and may even be detrimental to participants. A CDC report detailing rodeo-sustained injuries from 1981-1995, however, reveals that head and neck injuries accounted for 50% of all major rodeo injuries from 1991-1995.

Proposals hazy on changes in Medicare GME funding
Article Abstract:
Legislators are still debating how to reform federal support for graduate medical education. The fall 1995 GOP budget plan would create a federal trust fund for graduate medical education, while cutting back Medicare, which provides much of the funds for residencies. Pres Clinton proposes creating a commission to study the issue instead of creating a trust fund. Medicare reimburses costs related to more than 77,600 residencies at hospitals.

Residency advisory panel calls for cuts in IMG slots
Article Abstract:
The Council on Graduate Medical Education has called for a reduction in the number of slots available for physician residencies, especially slots for physicians from outside the US. Ending waivers for foreign physicians who remain in the US, rather than return to their native countries, is the focus of the Council's request. The Council also desires to reduce the number of residencies from 144% to 110% of the number of US medical graduates.
