Role of the TDx FLM assay in fetal lung maturity
Article Abstract:
The TDx FLM assay appears to be a useful test of fetal lung maturity. The TDx FLM assay is a simple, automated test that uses a fluorescent dye and can be performed in a standard laboratory in under one hour. Assessing fetal lung maturity is important in caring for complicated pregnancies and in the early diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Using amniotic fluid samples from 102 pregnancies, the TDx FLM assay was compared with three other tests of fetal lung maturity. The TDx-FLM assay equaled or surpassed the other tests in its sensitivity and specificity, and only one other test was less expensive. No test could reliably predict the development of RDS in the newborn infants. However for sequential testing purposes, in which several readings are used to predict the presence or absence of RDS, the TDx FLM appears to be the most cost-efficient and reliable test.

Cardiac troponin T levels in umbilical cord blood
Article Abstract:
Cardiac troponin T that is present in umbilical cord blood may indicate heart damage in the fetus. Cardiac troponin T is a protein that is normally only present in blood when the heart has been damaged. In a study of 12 babies who had cardiac troponin T in umbilical cord blood, all had been exposed to magnesium sulfate.

Post-call cognitive function and satisfaction in medical students on different call schedules: A prospective observational pilot study
Article Abstract:
The effects of 2 different call schedules on post-call cognitive function and satisfaction are evaluated. The results have shown no significant impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive scores, but night float has allowed students to feel subjectively more alert for clinical duties.
