Sad screening
Article Abstract:
Older people are at greater risk of depression due to isolation, bereavement, or ill health. Doctors often fail to recognise mental illness in the elderly because their contract concentrates on the physical health of older patients. Patients were found to be reluctant to discuss depression with their doctor, preferring to talk to nurses. A four year study by Liverpool University screened elderly patients who were depressed to assess the effectiveness of their treatment. Details are given in the article.

Distress signals
Article Abstract:
There are many factors that can precipitate depressive illness in the elderly which may result in the condition being seen as inescapable for people over 65 years of age. Depression occurs when the mood is low over a period of time. Death of a partner, chronic illness and retirement from paid employment can contribute to feelings of worthlessness and loneliness. Fifty percent of those who are primary carers for partners suffering from Alzheimer's disease also experience depression.

Declining blues
Article Abstract:
Depression in the elderly is thought to lead to early death as well as causing physical symptoms, loss of appetite and sleep problems. Research in Liverpool, England, revealed that 11.3% of those over 65 years of age were depressed. Incurable medical conditions can be made worse by depression or lead to depressive moods as well as social inactivity and loneliness. Successful treatment will allow the elderly not only to resume social contact but improve their medical condition.
