Impact of antiretroviral treatment on AIDS dementia: a longitudinal prospective event-related potential study
Article Abstract:
Zidovudine may delay the progression of dementia in AIDS patients. Researchers used an eye examination called event-related potentials (ERP) to measure delays in reaction time in 98 HIV patients indicating possible intellectual deficits. About half of the patients were taking zidovudine and the rest received no treatment. The eye exam was given three times over a two-year period. Patients on zidovudine had faster reaction times than those receiving no treatment. This was true regardless of which stage of the infection the patient was in.

Application of an expert system in the management of HIV-infected patients
Article Abstract:
An expert system that considers the genetic characteristics of the infecting virus may improve prescribing decisions in the treatment of patients with HIV infection. After the patient's HIV RNA sequence data are entered into the computer system, optimal drug regimens are recommended.
