Safety newsletters: who reads these things?
Article Abstract:
Safety newsletters are vital not only in safety education but also in promoting camaraderie in the workplace. Therefore, it is important that these publications be conceived in a manner with which workers would be encouraged to read them. An editorial calendar is important in organizing a line of topics that would be of interest and valuable to the readers. Newsletters can be made attractive by using cartoons, photographs, and high-quality paper. Furthermore, articles, whether they are published on paper or corporate Web sites, must be brief considering the workers' time.

10 myths of safety management
Article Abstract:
Ten misguided beliefs on safety management are presented. These include the view that safety is based on common sense, that merely preaching safety is enough, that all that is required is a written safety plan, that an effective incident investigation can be conducted easily and fast, that avoiding injury is the best motive for an employee to work safely, that safety incentive programs may be based only on incident records, and that only management can provide solutions to safety problems.

US Coast Guard Capt Walter E. Hanson believes in the importance of risk management strategies to the vessel safety program of the organization.
