Sarcoidosis
Article Abstract:
Sarcoidosis is a relatively common disease whose exact cause is unknown and whose treatment is challenging. It is characterized by the development of granulomas, which are small areas of inflammation. It commonly affects the lungs and lymph nodes but can also affect the heart, skin, liver, eyes and nervous system. It has a very strong environmental aspect and may be caused by exposure to toxins or infectious organisms. Chest X-rays often detect it and should be confirmed by a biopsy. Corticosteroids are the major drug treatment and methotrexate may also be effective.

Article Abstract:
Interferon gamma does not appear to improve the symptoms of a lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis, according to a study published in 2004. Interferon gamma is a natural substance produced in the body that prevents fibrosis, so doctors thought it might improve this disease. Unfortunately, it did not, although some patients with less severe disease might live longer if they take it.
