Severe preeclampsia superimposed on polyarteritis nodosa
Article Abstract:
Polyarteritis nodosa may be a rare complication of pregnancy. It involves inflammation of segments of arteries, usually in the kidneys, heart, muscles, and digestive system. A 22-year-old woman at 31 weeks of pregnancy was admitted to the hospital with high blood pressure and headaches. Her medical history included drug abuse, smoking, and hepatitis B virus-related polyarteritis nodosa leading to kidney failure. Her high blood pressure was treated unsuccessfully with intravenous nicardipine, and protein in the urine, kidney failure, and fluid buildup ensued. She improved greatly after delivery at 33 weeks' gestation, but kidney function was still reduced and protein in the urine continued. Such women should be counseled not to plan future pregnancies.

Magnesium sulfate therapy during asphyxia in near-term fetal lambs does not compromise the fetus but does not reduce cerebral injury
Article Abstract:
Magnesium sulfate treatment used to prevent preterm delivery may not harm the fetal brain but neither may it protect the brain from injury due to asphyxiation. Researchers occluded the umbilical cords of 20 fetal lambs four times every 30 minutes for five minutes after infusion with either saline or magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate therapy did not interfere with the fetus's adaptation to lack of oxygen but did not protect the fetal brain from asphyxia-related injury. Magnesium sulfate may not be a suitable preventive treatment for fetal asphyxiation, although it is useful for preventing preterm delivery.

Population pharmacokinetics of magnesium in preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Researchers studied the pharmacokinetics of magnesium in pregnant women who were given magnesium sulfate to treat preeclampsia. Measurements included systemic clearance, volume of distribution, baseline concentration, and half-life. This data can be used to determine the proper dosage to prevent seizures while reducing the risk of side effects.
