Sexual factors associated with cytomegalovirus seropositivity in human immunodeficiency virus-infected men
Article Abstract:
Sexually active men who have the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may significantly reduce their risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection by using condoms. Among 723 HIV-infected men tested for anti-CMV antibodies, several sexual behaviors, especially routine condom use, influenced the risk of exposure to the virus. Among those that reported always using condoms in the six months before discovering their HIV status, the rate of CMV exposure was significantly lower than those who reported no condom use during that time. Men having multiple sexual partners also had higher rates of exposure to the virus.

The use of auxiliary events to improve the analysis of survival for HIV-infected patients: application to the French Prospective Multicenter Cohort (SEROCO)
Article Abstract:
Two techniques for using auxiliary events to assess the status of HIV-infected patients may offer an alternative to death as a clinical endpoint in AIDS research. The methods consisted of a non-parametric Kaplan-Meier estimate and long-rank test and a parametric regression model. They were compared using two auxiliary events: a Karnovsky score below 75 and a first-time drop in the CD4 count below 200. The analysis of survival data was enhanced using these techniques.

Incidence and sexual risk factors of cytomegalovirus seroconversion in HIV-infected subjects
Article Abstract:
The use of a condom by HIV-infected persons can help minimize the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. In a study of 184 men who were HIV-positive but not infected by CMV, the rate of infection by CMV was found to be 9.18 per 100-person years. Among homosexual men, the rate was exceptionally high. The risk was found to be higher in those who never used condoms than in those who used them appropriately.
