Should we accept the status quo?
Article Abstract:
The operational basis of current health promotion, health education and public health services is questioned. Better ways of setting and attaining goals are described. Real progress will only be achieved through the practical approach of health development. Practitioners should focus more on enhancing health through small groups and at personal levels as opposed to a national population level. Mortality rates in the UK will not be greatly impacted unless health promotion funding is increased. The lack of a national health strategy is resulting in ineffectual health education efforts.

Education for empowerment: implications for professional development and training in health promotion
Article Abstract:
A study of empowerment as an aid to studying health promotion at Manchester University, England, found that this approach involves challenges for both students and facilitators. There is a paradox involved in teachers empowering learners and there are problems in carrying out this type of teaching in the context of a traditional establishment. New skills are needed such as learning how to take decisions in a democratic way. Practical difficulties emerged, but there were also opportunities offered by this method.

Workplace health promotion programmes: towards a framework for evaluation
Article Abstract:
The UK government sees health of the work force as a major issue. The tools and methodology used to evaluate health activity at work depend on the context. There is a need for basic research to be carried out in this area, as well as guidelines on evaluating programs. Training is needed to boost the quality of evaluation programs and imbue organizational cultures with health concerns. Information should be processed effectively if appropriate action is to be taken.
