Sleep problems of elementary school children: a community survey
Article Abstract:
Resistance to bedtime may be the main sleep problem of elementary school children. Researchers surveyed parents of 987 elementary-aged children regarding children's sleep habits and problems. Twenty-seven percent of parents reported their child resisted bedtime. Bedtime resistance was related to having inconsistent bedtimes and falling asleep away from bed. Another 11.3% of children experienced sleep-onset delays. Both delayed sleep onset and bedtime resistance were linked with delayed waking, indicating that sleep phases kept moving later. Other problems included insomnia, night waking, anxieties, and complaints of fatigue.
