Smoking after age 65 years and mortality in Barcelona, Spain
Article Abstract:
Associations between smoking after age 65 and mortality have been studied in Barcelona, Spain. Benefits of ceasing to smoke were also assessed, taking baseline health status into account. Effects of smoking extend to later life in the elderly general population of the study, which covered 477 males randomly selected. Relative risk of dying was 2.11 times higher in current smokers and 1.53 times higher in former smokers than in those who never smoked. After age 65, quitting reduces risk of death, but the men who quit perceived their own health to be worse than others perceived theirs to be.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease stage and health-related quality of life
Article Abstract:
Quality of life for patients with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease appears to decrease as disease severity increases. Three hundred twenty-one patients with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease were evaluated for disease severity using staging definitions recommended by the American Thoracic Society and for quality of life using questionnaires. Quality of life indicators closely followed staging definitions with lower scores corresponding to more advanced disease. These relationships were stronger for patients with other complicating conditions.

Comparison of performance-based and self-rated functional capacity in Spanish elderly
Article Abstract:
Spanish elderly may accurately report their degree of physical functioning. Researchers interviewed 626 older people in Barcelona, Spain, to compare their performance-based and self-reported physical capacity. Interviewers asked the participants to rate their health from very good to very poor. Walking speed and the time it takes to stand up five times when seated on a chair were measured. Although there are cultural differences to aging between Spain and the US, the disability reports were consistent and accurate overall.
