The social meaning of smoking for boys in a residential school for children with emotional and behavioural disorders
Article Abstract:
The social importance of smoking among children is studied and the connection between smoking and peer pressure is described. The smoking habits of 34 boys aged 12-15 in a residential school are studied. All except one boy smoke more at the weekend than during the week at school. Some 75% of the boys would only try to give up smoking again via a fitness programme. Some 93% of pupils at the school smoke, smoking 40 cigarettes daily at home at the weekend and 5 to 30 at school during the week. An intervention programme was initiated in 1990 to reduce the boys' smoking rate.

An assessment of dental health education in a baby clinic
Article Abstract:
Various aspects of dental health behaviour have been improved by the supply of dental health advice in baby clinics, according to a survey carried out in Salford, UK, during Nov and Dec 1990. The sample group was divided into two, of which one group (A) remembered receiving dental health advice at baby clinics, while the other (B) did not. Although no difference was noted regarding consumption of sugary drinks, regular visits to the dentist, or brushing before the age of one, 41% of group A took fluoride supplements, compared to 23% of group B.
