Sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of African-American women with HIV and AIDS in Los Angeles County, 1990-1997
Article Abstract:
African-American women have many risk factors for HIV infection. A survey of 624 HIV-infected African-American women in Los Angeles County found that 88% were unemployed, 64% were single mothers, 86% were on welfare and 76% had an annual income less than $10,000. Half had a history of crack cocaine use. Compared to women of other races, they also had more sexual partners, more sexually transmitted diseases and were more likely to trade sex for money or drugs.
