Some insurers revise mammography coverage policies
Article Abstract:
Revised mammography guidelines from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have prompted health insurers Aetna U.S. Healthcare and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to change their mammography screening policies. NCI guidelines released in 1997 recommend that women aged 40-49 receive annual or bi-annual mammograms, a departure from National Institutes of Health recommendations that left mammograms to the discretion of women and their physicians. Aetna and Anthem have both revised their coverage policies; Aetna now pays for mammograms for women 40 and older.
