Public awareness of the economic and social tolls of violence against women and children must be increased so more steps can be take toward preventing these injustices. Discriminatory practices against women perpetuated by society are also violence.

World Health Day 1993 is a campaign to ignite activism by reminding people that violence and injury are preventable. Hidden types of violence such as family abuse are especially in need of attention.
