Spontaneous remission in a patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia
Article Abstract:
A 45-year-old man experinced a spontaneous cure of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). In 1985, he was diagnosed with CML during routine testing for an ulcer. Follow-up without treatment was planned. By the next month, his enlarged liver had returned to normal size. Four months later, white blood cells and platelet counts were normal, and the chromosomal abnormality in bone marrow cells that is the definitive diagnostic sign of CML had disappeared. As of January 1996, the man remains well. There is no explanation for this exceedingly rare occurrence.
