Transplantation in first remission of acute myeloid leukemia
Article Abstract:
Bone marrow transplants may no longer be the most appropriate treatment for patients with acute myeloid leukemia who have a relapse following chemotherapy. Transplants were more effective than chemotherapy in the 1980s, but chemotherapy has improved since then. Also, researchers have discovered factors that influence an individual patient's prognosis. Consequently, patients with poor prognostic factors can be offered one treatment over another. Several studies have found that bone marrow transplants are no longer more effective than chemotherapy.

Hematopoietic growth factors and the future of therapeutic research on acute myeloid leukemia
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine whether patients with acute myeloid leukemia will benefit from treatment with hematopoietic growth factors such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. These growth factors stimulate immature cells to mature. Some doctors believe they might also make cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapy.

Prognostically useful gene-expression profiles in acute myeloid leukemia
Article Abstract:
A combination of methods must be used to classify the disease myeloid leukemia, which makes therapeutic decisions, and determine the prognosis. Gene-expression profiling allows a comprehensive classification of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that includes previously identified genetically defined subgroups and a novel cluster with an adverse prognosis.
