Off-site dental evaluation program for prospective bone marrow transplant recipients
Article Abstract:
Dental evaluations performed by the patient's own dentist appear to be a feasible way to provide accurate dental screening before a bone marrow transplant (BMT). The dentists of 200 patients undergoing BMT were asked to thoroughly evaluate the dental health of their patient, take appropriate X-rays, treat possible infections, and forward this information to the patient's BMT specialist. Eighty percent of the screening packets were complete and accurate. However, many dentists did not return the packets on time and several missed potential infection problems with wisdom teeth and root canals.

Current perspectives on dental patients: receiving coumarin anticoagulant therapy
Article Abstract:
An algorithm is presented to help dentists manage patients who are taking coumarin. Coumarin is an anticoagulant that can cause excessive bleeding after many dental procedures. Dentists should interview patients carefully and ask any who are taking coumarin to have their prothrombin time checked on the day of the procedure. The procedure can be postponed until the patient has stopped taking coumarin or the coumarin can be temporarily discontinued. Heparin can also be substituted for coumarin. There are additional strategies that can reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding.
