Spot hazards, dress safely
Article Abstract:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has modified its regulations on personal protective equipment (PPE) to assist employers in choosing the right safety wear. Selecting a PPE involves a conscientious job-hazard assessment. Companies must take into account basic hazard categories such as impact, penetration, and compression. Job sites must be examined for risks to the feet, head, eyes, and face. Potentionally dangerous objects must also be considered. Furthermore, proper fit must suit the job of the workers and must not hinder performance.

Get a grip on hand PPE
Article Abstract:
Protection of the hand and fingers in the workplace is an important concern and has generated the business of manufacturing a wide array of protective gloves, hand pads and assorted devices. Current emphasis is on the manufacture of specialized equipment for industrial and environmental work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, through an additional provision in its law on occupational safety, mandates that the right protection devices should be worn over the hands during work that requires exposure to dangerous situations.

PPE warning labels raise questions
Article Abstract:
Most industrial safety experts agree that warning labels on personal -protective equipment (PPE) are necessary, but safety authorities have not been able to formulate uniform standards for PPE warning labels. The Worker Protection Warning Act, which was proposed by Rep. Rob Andrews in 1994 and would have required the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to require uniform standards for PPE labels, was stalled in Congress. Andrews plans to reintroduce the bill in 1995 with support from the Industrial Safety Equipment Assn.
