States struggle with transition to Medicaid managed care
Article Abstract:
Kaiser Commission on the Future of Medicaid Exec Dir Diane Rowland said that many of the state governments that have adopted Medicaid managed care programs have made serious mistakes. Rowland said that Tennessee, which implemented its TennCare program on Jan 1, 1994, was an example of how not to introduce Medicaid managed care. Despite its lack of a managed care infrastructure, Tennessee implemented the program and it has been plagued by problems. Rowland cautioned that states should not expect immediate cost savings from the implementation of large-scale, state-wide plans.
