Stem cells in the follicle bulge contribute to wound repair but not to homeostasis of the epidermis
Article Abstract:
A study to determine whether bulge cells are necessary for epidermal renewal is presented by ablating these cells by targeting them with a suicide gene encoding herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) using a keratin 1-15 (Krt1-15) promoter. The findings have implications for both the gene therapy and for development of treatment of wounds, as it is necessary to consider epidermal and hair follicle stem cells as distinct populations.

Legal issues in genomic medicine
Article Abstract:
Legal isssues affecting physicians and medical researchers in the age of the human genome project and genetic engineering are examined. Topics include patient-physician confidentiality, malpractice law related to the failure of physicians to alert patients about the availability of genetic tests, impact of genetic susceptibility to disease on insurance and employment opportunities, and laws regarding stem-cell research.

Nucleus hears axon's pain
Article Abstract:
Axons can send a message to the cell body to implement repair programs, upon injury to the body. To date, the identity and nature of the retrograde injury signaling process has remained a mystery, but this message is now shown to require a complex of the microtubule motor dynein and proteins that mediates nuclear-cytoplasmic transport.
