Stopping assisted suicide: Oregon bills try to revise -or repeal- law on assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
Physician-assisted suicide will likely be implemented in Oregon in 1997, despite a barrage of measures seeking to overturn the state's 1994 measure allowing the procedure. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a challenge to Oregon's law in February 1997; a number of measures have since reached the Oregon Legislature, including two that would repeal the 1994 vote. A 1997 Oregon Right to Die phone poll revealed that 49% of respondents would definitely vote for the measure if presented with it in 1997; an additional 12% said they would probably vote for the measure.

State seeks to deny transplants to death row inmates
Article Abstract:
Legislation is pending in Washington State denying death row inmates the right to have organ transplants. Some ethicists argue that the law would let the state decide whether an individual is worthy of health care. Others argue that without the law, inmates are being given a special privilege that is not available to law-abiding, ordinary citizens.
