Structured GP liaison for substance misuse
Article Abstract:
General practitioners (GPs) are being encouraged to work closely with drug and alcohol services when offering primary care to patients suffering from these problems. The Chester and Ellesmere Drug and Alcohol Service aims to improve communication between GPs and drug and alcohol staff, to encourage working together and increase awareness and confidence. The shared care scheme means GPs can agree a care plan with the patient and the community care team will take responsibility for their care. Details of the services and care contract offered by the Chester and Ellesmere Service are given.

Sobering effect
Article Abstract:
Nurses are in the front line of dealing with alcohol-related cases in accident and emergency units. Alcohol intoxication can lead to reduced blood glucose levels and blocked airways due to vomiting. Nurses should asses patient's dependability on alcohol on admittance which may effect the type of treatment given. Screening patients is an effective method of assess drink dependency. Treating patients in a calm manner is important when dealing with a patient with alcohol-related problems, although violent patients may need to be sedated.
