Subclinical thyroid disease: a clinician's perspective
Article Abstract:
Treatment of thyroid disease when it is at a subclinical level is controversial, and there is little evidence-based data to rely on, but treatment of patients at this stage is probably justified. There are questions to be answered for each physician to determine his or own strategy. These questions include whether there are symptoms caused by the disease, whether organs are being affected and potential sickness is imminent, and if treatment will be of benefit.

Screening for thyroid disease
Article Abstract:
Guidelines are being established concerning medical screening for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism at the subclinical level. These may be defined as when a patient has anormal thyroxine level and either and elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level (hypothryroidism) or an undetectable TSH level (hyperthyroidism). Recommendations are made as to who most needs the screening to preserve health and prevent disease progression and/or complications.
