Soluble TNF-I, TNF-II, IL-1RA indicate disease activity
Article Abstract:
A study sought to determine the serum levels of soluble tumor necrosis factors (sTNFR) I and II, interleukin 1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist and soluble IL-1 receptor type II in tuberculosis (TB) patients during and after treatment. Although increased sTNFR and/or IL-1ra are not active TB-specific, these cytokine inhibitors could function as markers of disease activity. Used along with traditional clinical parameters such as symptoms, chest X-rays and culture and smear results, sequential measurements of these mediators in serum may aid in the monitoring of anti-TB therapy.

Double repetitive PCR as sensitive as IS6110?
Article Abstract:
Spoligotyping combined with double-repetitive-element polymerase chain reaction have the same diagnostic capabilities as IS6110-restriction fragment length polymorphism in determining the presence of tuberculosis. Moreover, the technique can be used in developing countries with high incidences of tuberculosis and is capable of managing large amount of samples. However, the technique can not be used alone as a first-line test because of difficulty in test interpretation.

Poncet's disease with oral ulcers/tuberculid reported
Article Abstract:
A case of tuberculous rheumatism known as Poncet's disease, involving an otherwise healthy 51-year-old woman with painful oral ulcers, rash, fever and weight loss for three weeks, is reported. Researchers at the Hospital Virgin del Camino led by Carlos Perez said it is the first reported case of Poncet's disease, which is characterized by a polyarthritis during acute tuberculous infection, with no mycobacterial involvement or other known cause of polyarthritis.
