Survival of AIDS patients in the emerging epidemic in Bangkok, Thailand
Article Abstract:
People in Thailand who develop AIDS may die sooner after AIDS diagnosis than people in developed nations, possibly because the diagnosis occurs well after HIV infection. Researchers reviewed medical records of 329 Thai nationals with AIDS who were cared for between 1987 and 1993 at a hospital outside of Bangkok, Thailand. Of these people, 152 had died. The median time of survival following diagnosis was 7 months and the probability of surviving one year was 39%. Developed nations such as the US and the UK report survival times of 11 to 20 months. Longer survival times in Thailand were associated with age between 26 and 35 years, an initial diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and sexual risk factors rather than intravenous drug use and other risk factors. Low CD4 counts upon diagnosis suggest that the brief survival of these people may be due to late diagnosis.

Impact of HIV on families of HIV-infected women who have recently given birth, Bangkok, Thailand
Article Abstract:
There seems to be insufficient family support in Bangkok, Thailand for HIV-infected women who give birth. Interviews were held with 129 HIV-infected women 18 to 24 months after delivery. In the time from childbirth, there had been major changes in many families. More of the women were living alone, many partners had become sick or died, there was separation from other family members as well, and family income had dropped. Almost half were no longer primary caretakers for their children.
