Survival of dopaminergic neurons in fetal-tissue grafts
Article Abstract:
The use of fetal brain tissue to improve the motor function of patients with Parkinson's disease may be beneficial, but should still be considered experimental. Conflicting results of studies in the late 1980s and 1990s about the use of brain tissue from human fetuses have raised ethical and legal questions. Improvements in motor function were noted in a 59-year-old man with Parkinson's disease following surgery to graft fetal brain tissue. The man died from unrelated causes 18 months after the surgery. His autopsied brain revealed that the grafted fetal tissue had survived and grown into the brain. Survival of grafted fetal tissue in people with other conditions remains unknown. Experimental use of grafted fetal tissue should continue using existing ethical and legal precautions.

Diagnosis and initial management of Parkinson's disease
Article Abstract:
The common clinical problem of Parkinson's disease is highlighted with a case study of a 62-year-old man with an intermittent tremor in his left hand and some vague discomfort in the left arm. Guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology suggest that initiating dopaminergic therapy with either levodopa or dopamine agonists is reasonable.
