Symptomatic hypocalcemia after tocolytic therapy with magnesium sulfate and nifedipine
Article Abstract:
A report presenting 2 cases of symptomatic hypocalcemia in women treated with magnesium sulfate for tocolysis: the first for preterm labor, with subsequent nifedipine administration; the second for preterm premature rupture of membranes are discussed. It is concluded that marked hypocalcemia is clearly associated with magnesium sulfate infusion and it is suggested that there are less evidence for synergistic toxicity of magnesium sulfate and nifedipine.

Maternal and perinatal outcomes during expectant management of 239 severe preeclamptic women between 24 and 33 weeks' gestation
Article Abstract:
A study was undertaken to determine pregnancy prolongation, and maternal and perinatal outcomes after expectant management of singleton pregnancies with severe preeclampsia between 24 and 33 weeks' gestation. It revealed that expectant management of severe preeclampsia at 24 and 33 weeks in a tertiary care center is associated with good perinatal mortality and neonatal outcome with a minimal risk for the mother.

Magnesium sulfate prophylaxis in preeclampsia: lessons learned from recent trials
Article Abstract:
Observational studies and randomized trials are used to analyze the use of various regiments of magnesium sulfate to prevent or reduce the rate of seizures and complications in women with preeclampsia. The results recommended that magnesium can be used intravenously as a 6 g loading dose over 20 to 30 minutes, and followed by a maintenance dose of 2 g/hour.
