Synthetic hair braid extension artifacts in panoramic radiographs
Article Abstract:
Dentists need to be aware that some of their patients may wear synthetic hair braid extensions that could compromise the quality of X-rays. Dentists from Howard University's College of Dentistry report two cases where the synthetic hair braid extensions worn by the patient interfered with the image of the teeth seen on a panoramic X-ray of the mouth. According to the manufacturers, the extensions consist mostly of polyvinyl or nylon-like materials in addition to proprietary components. Polyvinyl and nylon are not known to show up on an X-ray, so the proprietary components may be responsible.

Mandibular metastasis of endometrial carcinoma diagnosed via a dental radiograph: a case report
Article Abstract:
Dentists should closely examine all suspicious changes on a dental X-ray. A case is presented of a 55-year-old woman whose dental X-ray showed changes in the jawbone. Examination of her oral cavity showed swelling along the bone. Surgery under local anesthesia revealed a mass which on further microscopic examination looked like cancer. She was referred to an oncologist and a pelvic exam revealed a mass in her uterus and extensive metastatic cancer in her lungs and abdomen. A hysterectomy confirmed that she had metastatic endometrial cancer.
