Taking the trauma out of a crisis: Trauma patients are likely to enter hospital via A&E
Article Abstract:
Trauma patients are likely to enter hospital via the A&E department, and an important part of a nurse's role is constant reassurance and explanation. A&E nurses may have to contact relatives and it is important to prepare the information prior to contact. It can be helpful to encourage relatives to be with the patient. Relatives can become angry or hostile towards staff, and nurses should acknowledge their fear and anxiety, and allow them to vent their feelings to help them accept the situation.

Deskilling or extending?
Article Abstract:
It is argued that medical assessment units (MAU) can impact skill-retention among nurses working in general medical wards. MAUs were introduced in order to deal with acute medical admissions, however, by the time the patient is transferred to the ward, the acute episode has passed. While nurses with significant experience will not be affected, students and newly qualified nurses will not have been exposed to acute situations.

Is the clinical nurse specialist deskilling the general nurse?
Article Abstract:
Contrasting views are presented on whether the clinical nurse specialist is having a negative impact on the role of the general nurse in the UK. Some observers feel that nursing is becoming too fragmented, while others feel that specialist skills can often be transferred to general nurses.
