Telomeres, telomerase, and cancer
Article Abstract:
Researchers hope to target the enzyme telomerase to treat cancer. Telomerase synthesizes telomeres, which occur on the ends of chromosomes. In normal cells, the telomeres get shorter and shorter and the cell eventually dies. In cancer cells, telomerase prevents this from happening, and the cells become immortal. Telomerase actually consists of a complex of proteins and RNA. One of the proteins is the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which uses the RNA as a template to reconstruct the telomere. Defective reverse transcriptase can interfere with this process and kill the cancer cells.

Elective single-embryo transfer versus double-embryo transfer in vitro fertilization
Article Abstract:
A randomized, multicenter trial is conducted to assess the equivalence of two approaches to in vitro fertilization with respect to the rates of pregnancy that result in at least one birth and to compare associated rates of multiple gestation. The results reveal that in women under 36 years of age, one frozen-and-thawed embryo dramatically reduces the rate of multiple births while achieving a rate of live births that is not lower than the rate that is achievable with a double-embryo transfer.
