Telomeres, telomerase, and human disease
Article Abstract:
Several fundamental discoveries in chromosome and cell biology reverberate beyond the basic-science arena, having ramifications for human health and disease. Research shows that telomeres, the genetic segments that appear at a chromosome's ends, together with telomerase, an enzyme that adds telomere repeats to the ends of the chromosome, are central to the biology of cancer, stem cells, aging, and the inherited syndrome dyskeratosis congenita.

Oral erythromycin and the risk of sudden death from cardiac causes
Article Abstract:
The association between the use of erythromycin and the risk of sudden death from cardiac causes is studied, and it is determined whether this risk was increased with the concurrent use of strong inhibitors of cytochrome P-450 3A (CYP3A). It is suggested that the concurrent use of erythromycin and strong inhibitors of CYP3A should be avoided, as it increases the rate of sudden death from cardiac causes.

The NIH budget and the future of biomedical research
Article Abstract:
Federal funding for biomedical research in the U.S. through National Institutes of Health (NIH) has fueled discoveries that have advanced the understanding of human disease, led to novel and effective diagnostic tools and therapies and made research enterprise an international paragon. However, recent governments have reduced the NIH budget, which has hampered the growth of research work.
