Interleukin 1 receptor antagonist gene polymorphism in women with vulvar vestibulitis
Article Abstract:
A gene mutation affecting the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist may cause vulvar vestibulitis. Vulvar vestibulitis is an inflammation of the vulva and vagina that can make sexual intercourse painful. In a study of 451 women, 53% with vulvar vestibulitis had the mutation compared to 8% of women who did not have vulvar vestibulitis. The mutation would decrease levels of interleukin 1 receptor antagonist, which is a natural anti-inflammatory protein.
