Testosterone is an anabolic hormone that facilitates protein synthesis in muscle cells. Cortisol, which is secreted in reaction to stress, strips the proteins in these cells. The roles of mental stress, nutrition and sleep habits in protein degradation are discussed.

Flexion and extension of any joint moves muscles attached to it. Muscles in the gluteal region control hip movements. Thus, any exercise which extends the hips works out muscles in that region.
