The Hazards of Scoring the Quality of Clinical Trials for Meta-analysis
Article Abstract:
The scores that are used to identify high-quality trials for meta-analysis may affect the conclusions of the analysis. Meta-analysis is a method for combining the results of many clinical trials into one result. There are 25 different scores to identify the best clinical trials for meta-analysis. Researchers used all 25 scores to analyze 17 clinical trials of low-molecular-weight heparin with standard heparin for the prevention of postoperative blood clots. Depending on which score was used, low-molecular weight heparin was superior to standard heparin or about the same.

Sirolimus-eluting and paclitaxel-eluting stents for coronary revascularization
Article Abstract:
A randomized, controlled, single-blind trial is conducted to compare sirolimus-eluting stents with paclitaxel-eluting stents in 1012 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The results reveal that as compared with paclitaxel-eluting stents, the use of sirolimus-eluting stents results in fewer major adverse cardiac events, primarily by decreasing the rates of clinical and angiographic restenosis.

Value of Flow Diagrams in Reports of Randomized Controlled Trials
Article Abstract:
Many biomedical scientists do not include the proper information in patient flow charts that they include in their published reports, according to an analysis of of 270 reports published in five biomedical journals in 1998. These flow charts show how many patients received each of the treatments under study and are recommended by the CONSORT guidelines for the reporting of clinical trials.
