The Impact of Hospitalists on Medical Education and the Academic Health System
Article Abstract:
Hospitalist physicians will likely affect the care of patients and the training of medical residents in academic health centers. Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists are predicted to improve the treatment of patients while hospitalized, but they may be less likely to seek specialists consultations for their patients. The reduction in specialist consultations may affect the training of medical residents. Hospitalists are likely to improve patient care by increasing the use of clinical pathways, promoting quality assurance programs, and providing more consistent care for inpatients.

Hospitalists and the Practice of Inpatient Medicine: Results of a Survey of the National Association of Inpatient Physicians
Article Abstract:
Hospitalists are most commonly internal medicine specialists who receive a salary for managing the inpatient care of hospitalized patients. The hospitalist physician takes over the care of the patient from a primary care doctor while the patient is hospitalized, potentially improving the quality of hospital care. Researchers surveyed 327 hospitalists, and found that 89% were internists, 78% were salaried, and 37% performed limited outpatient care. Developing practice guidelines and performing quality assurance functions were the most frequent non-clinical activities of hospitalist physicians.

An Employer's Perspective on Hospitalists as a Source of Improved Health Care Value
Article Abstract:
Large employers may benefit from the hospitalist model of inpatient care for their employees, and they should promote this method of care. Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the treatment of hospitalized patients, and may provide superior care. Employers who purchase health care may find their employees are more satisfied with the care they receive from hospitalist physicians, and they should encourage the successful implementation of hospitalist programs.
