Learning together, working together
Article Abstract:
UK midwives are being trained to bridge the gap between community and hospital by offering women a set of services which can impact on their lives and those of their children. Key skill areas are communication, health promotion, management and decision-making. Midwives can influence women's health in the community because they are in direct communication with those at most risk. Learning to recognize and assess possible problems could ultimately impact on rates of infant death and mental illness. Midwives face a lack of resources and support which could undermine the work they do in the community.

Splintering research
Article Abstract:
The increase in the number of UK trust hospitals has fuelled concerns that that area of nursing research may be threatened. Fragmentation of nursing research positions will lead to difficulties concerning research collaboration, and it is necessary that the issue is fully discussed by purchasers, providers and researchers. However, there is optimism that the Dept of Health's nursing research task force will look at all aspects of nursing research in the new-style National Health Service.
