The assessment of patients with malignant fungating wounds - a holistic approach
Article Abstract:
The main aims for treating a malignant fungating wound should be controlling tumour growth, stopping surface haemorrhage and retaining and restoring the viability of the patient's tissues. It is vital that any wound assessment techniques or dressings used do not interact negatively with any course of treatment the patient may already be taking. Care should be taken to make accurate records of the change in surface area of an open wound. Attention should be given to boosting the patient's healing potential, eliminating any offensive odour and limiting associated wound pain.

Trauma injury nursing in A&E
Article Abstract:
Recent research has focused on developing protocols which can guide accident and emergency nurses in the treatment of major trauma injuries. It has been found that training programmes can play a key role in reducing mortality rates from such injuries. The first priority is to immobilise the patient's neck, as it is possible that the cervical vertebrae are unstable. After this, attention must be given to the patient's breathing, circulation and central nervous system, and the whole patient must be exposed in order to check for further injuries.
