Smoldering Arteries? Low-grade Inflammation and Coronary Heart Disease
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine the role of inflammation in heart disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein in the body that is produced during inflammation. Blood levels can increase 10,000 times when body tissues are injured or infected. Because of this, CRP can be measured in blood samples, even those that have been collected in the past and then stored. A 1999 study found that obese people have higher blood levels of CRP than normal-weight people. People with elevated CRP levels also seem to be at risk for heart disease.

Major risk factors for cardiovascular disease: debunking the "only 50%" myth
Article Abstract:
Three studies published in 2003 confirm that 80% to 90% of people who develop cardiovascular disease have at least one of the four most important risk factors: smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. People who have one or more of these risk factors should be treated aggressively to reduce their risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
