The care programme approach
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Health's Care Plan Approach (CPA) gives a structure to the co-ordinated care in the community of patients with long-term mental health problems. Agencies considering CPA should ensure that they have a good working relationship with other agencies which will be involved. They initially need to co-operate in making a thorough assessment of the needs of an individual patient. They multi-agency group will then develop a care plan which meets these needs, clearly identifies responsibilities and includes plans for any emergency. They will also appoint a key worker.

A hindrance to care?
Article Abstract:
Legislation enabling compulsory treatment of non-compliant mentally-ill patients is inappropriate. It threatens individual freedom and limits research into alternative strategies. Support from Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs) could encourage compliance with community-based treatment. However, improved CPN training in psychosocial intervention would be necssary. Routine targeting of most vulnerable clients is also essential.
