Reflections from a side ward
Article Abstract:
The need for nurses to express their own fears and concerns about death by speaking frankly and openly about their experiences of caring for dying patients is discussed. Deaths encountered in their clinical practice can provide nurses with an opportunity for spiritual growth and development. Nurses will only feel comfortable in helping others to face death once they have developed self-awareness and eradicated their own fears. Nurses are forced to confront their fears and anxieties when they care for dying patients on side wards.

A change for the better
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes her experiences working in an African hospital for a year. She volunteered to go to a hospital in Agogo, Ghana, through the Scottish Churches World Exchange programme. She discovers that what she perceives as a dirty environment, with no running water in the department, limited wound-care dressings and a shortage of other basic supplies, arises from lack of funds and not lack of professionalism . Working in the hospital highlights the inflexibility of nursing supervision in British hospitals.
