The development of epidemiology in Bohemia
Article Abstract:
The military pioneered the development of epidemiology in the Czech Republic when it undertook smallpox immunization during the Napoleonic wars. When Czechoslovakia became independent in 1918, public health care witnessed the establishment of bacteriological and serological health care sectors and the creation of hygiene, microbiology, social medicine and epidemiology departments. The establishment of the State Institute of Health in Prague in Nov. 1925 propelled the development of epidemiology with its successful epidemiologic interventions.

Ten Encounters With the US Health Sector, 1930-1999
Article Abstract:
A political economist and government consultant discusses his interaction with the US health care system since the 1930s. He worked in the Medical Department of the US Army between 1943 and 1946 and his primary job was to plan and oversee the treatment of tens of thousands of wounded Americans who would be returned to the US for treatment. After the war, he became interested in health policy, and after 1980 it became his primary area of research. He believes Americans have not taken responsibility for their own health both then and now.

Not myositis: a series of chance encounters
Article Abstract:
Several case studies are reviewed to illustrate the fact that muscle weakness is not limited to myositis, which is an inflammation of skeletal muscles. Six women were initially diagnosed with myositis, but in each case, the diagnosis was subsequently changed. Most had presented with fatigue, muscle weakness and laboratory indications of muscle damage. Their final diagnoses were cancer, arteritis, ipecac abuse, hypothyroidism and phosphofructokinase deficiency.
